Nice, nice, fan.

Got this to replace an el cheapo fan and we really like it. It is a vast improvement over our old one.Lighting is nice with the two brightness options and the fan is super quiet on low and while the high fan is naturally louder it is not what I call too loud.I like the enclosed underside and the two large filter.The only thing I'd change would be to have it where the fan is more forward so there would be more direct suction for the front stove burners.Still when using the front burners you can see the steam being pulled up and out by the fan.I would buy again definitely.And Amazon had the best price I could find anywhere.

Lackluster performance in exhaust fan.

We had trouble finding the 42 inch size locally, so Amazon came through for us. I don't find that the fan works particularly well on this range hood. It was installed correctly (to an outside vent). However, we are more willing to actually touch it (compared to 1965 original range hood) and therefore use it more than the one we replaced (which actually moved air better, go figure) -- so all in all it works out. The two light levels are quite nice to have, also. However, if and when we remodel the kitchen to not look like something out of a 'Mad Men' set, I'll be more particular about selecting a range hood. For instance, on a higher quality range hood, the mesh filters will have latch mounting (this one uses a simple friction mount, like a window screen.) All said, it does work ok (especially given we don't cook that much) and the price wasn't bad.

I have a built in range that requires this width range hood, the old one died, which turned out good for me as this is much better then the old one. It's really good value for the money.

Looks good - but has quality control problems

This hood is a big improvement over the 20 year old model it replaced, but I had a few problems with it:- the two hood lights were wired incorrectly, so it was impossible to turn them on and off without unscrewing the bulbs. Luckily I enjoy tracing wiring around and was able to fix it, but somebody isn't doing the product testing at Broan.- one of the spot welds had popped open, so there is a slight grin on one side. You can't see it from across the kitchen, but it's kinda annoying for me since I know it's there- the plastic mounting fixture for the damper broke when I was trying to reseat the damper with a screwdriver, so now I can't install the damperDespite these problems, the hood still works and looks fine, but it's disapointing that the quality control on the product was so poor

Looks good--faulty manufacturing

I chose this particular S/S range hood because of its features and styling. The black oval panel on the front gave a nice appearance considering many of my S/S appliances have a touch of black, plus it came with a light-dimming nightlight feature.But there are problems with Broan's manufacturing and design.After only 5 days of use the light switch/wiring went bad. I opened up the electrical panel and tugged on the wires; it worked for 3 more days. Then, suddenly, nothing. I emailed Amazon's 3rd party seller, The Price Pros, and they were FABULOUS! Shipped a new one out the next day, I installed it and all went well-- until this morning. No lights! Nothing, unless I back the bulb out a little and jiggle the whole fixture. Then I get some flickering.The chances of getting 2 bad units with the same problem is indicative of an inherent problem; it's not just coincidence. I would stay away from this range hood until Broan has indicated they have solved and fixed the problem.I've just written to the Price Pros-- let's see if they stay FABULOUS! I've asked for my money back so I could buy a different hood. I'll probably still buy a Broan, but I don't want this one.ADDENDUM-- THE PRICE PROS have responded, and they were as helpful as a screen door on a submarine. A simple "it's past our 30 day guarantee, sorry". Not a word about where to get help. As 'FABULOUS' as they were before they are now abjectly UNCARING. Typical Amazon 3rd party seller...take the money and run.

Much quieter than my old one, but....

This unit arrived in good order and quickly. I only wished a better models looked this good, By better, I mean that the light switch doesn't work properly and i need to get new switch. It groans when I initially turn on the unit when it goes from high setting to low setting. I need to start it on low and slowly bring it up to the desired speed and on high, it might take a couple of minurs to settle down then it might take a couple of adjustmens for unit to find it's "groove." After that, and after the light switch finds a spot to settle in on the low setting, I can cook without irritation. Also, it is smaller in the rear of the unit than the front, but i don't find that much of a problem. I also had to take the little black grill off the front and although it has a small plastic solid shield, it still leaked a lot out the front of this vented installation, so I used black Gorilla Tape over the hole, replaced the grill and trimmed the tape. The light fixture doesn't accomodate bulbs any bigger than the 40w A15 bulbs, although I found LED bulbs that fit and use only 14 total watts rather than 80 watts suggested. I thought Broan used engineers to design these things. Both bulbs light up together instead of going from one bulb to two bulbs.

Looks great, but has annoying 'buzz'

Just got this range hood (branded as a 'Kenmore', but looks exactly the same)...Pros:-variable speed fan (not just low and high speed)-good looks-strong enough to move some air on highCons:-Really annoying buzz from the motor (tranformer?) at any speed. (we had a more expensive model that didn't fit, and that motor was perfectly quiet on low...although it only had high and low speed, and the high speed sounded like a jet engine)The noise is a bummer, other than that, it's good.

Looks better than it sounds

The unit looks great: stainless steel and black. The installation instructions describes this hood as the "Quiet Hood". It is anything but. When the fan starts up, it has a tinny, raspy quality about it that surprises you, like it is made of thin metal. We installed the fan with a rear, rectangular vent. The baffle plate appears to leak air through the front grill. We like the "night light" feature, and the full strength light is quite adequate.

Not many alternatives

The good :1. There don't seem to be many hoods that lie between the super-cheap ones that just don't suck any air at all and the super-expensive designer kitchen fetishist ones. This one is in that gap, so that's good.The bad :1. Hidden switches are really terrible for usability. The "clean lines" that make it impossible to find the switch quickly are something that only a suburban housewife that doesn't actually cook could love.2. The suction surface area is actually quite small. Most of the interior is a big plate that gets filthy. Also the lights are not covered and provide ingress for grease into the inside of the machine.3. The low setting is quiet but hardly sucks any air, and the high setting sucks a lot of air but is really loud; a middle setting would have been nice. In general with Broan products I'm not impressed by the air flow to sound ratio (there's rather too much noise for the amount of air flow).4. Cheap cheap cheap. Every piece feels like they cut it down to minimum cost and quality. The switches feel stiff and fragile. It's held together by a minimum of screws. There are lots of holes and turbulence-creators in the air flow path. There's lots of un-padded metal on metal contact. The mounting points are not reinforced. Just typical cheapo Broan.

Not perfect.

The dimensions are not exactly what they state. I was replacing an existing Broan of same dimensions and now have a gap on either side. Called Broan customer support and they stated they are made less than the documented spec to fit custom kitchens. Ah Buh?Low setting is not .5 sones. low and high very similar in sound and more like 5-7 sones.Wife burnt hand using halogen lamps. Lamps placed too close to switch and not visible...switched to led and recommend doing so.Spot welds visible on hood but not over bearing.

Broan RP130SS Range Hood

I had an old range hood that had reached the end of life and had to replace it with another stainless steel one of the same dimensions. Fortunately, I was able to find this one. It is well made and the filters are not flimsy, meaning that they can be washed multiple times in a dishwasher without problem. Also, the halogen lighting is very bright, giving great illumination of the range surface while cooking. There are two fan speeds. The low speed setting is very quiet, while the high speed setting, though louder, is very effective.

Great hood for the price

This hood has the combination of features we were looking for. It ships as ductless, with punch-outs on the top and back that will allow you to convert to ducted installation. It has two light levels and a variable rotary speed control. To get all of this, including shipping, for under $100 in stainless steel is quite a good deal. It is made in USA, and the quality is very good. Even at its highest speed, it is not overly loud. Its noise rating at 200cfm is lower than any other fan I researched between 160 and 190cfm.The product description says you need to install the RF-34 charcoal filter to "convert" it to ductless operation. I went ahead and paid the $10 (including shipping) for the filter. It rests between the metal grease filter and the fan. It has no other function than to remove odors, so you could probably do without it.Installation was straightforward. It operates very well and looks very good. It shipped quickly and was packaged adequately. I would have paid close to $200 for something similar at my local home improvement store, and even then it would have been manufactured in China. I definitely recommend this product, and recommend purchasing it from Amazon.

Great range hood

This is a great range hood for the money. I read the prior reviews that said they had problems installing the unit, but I found the installation to be easy. It should be just as easy for anyone else with reasonable mechanical skills and a few good tools. I found my Dremel tool with a cut off wheel to be especially handy for cutting the tabs on the duct vent opening. I also read the reviews that said the unit was too noisy. Sure it makes noise, if you turn the variable speed fan all the way up. I found the air extraction to be very excellent at lower speeds, and I really do like the continuously variable speed feature. On the whole, I find the unit to be very quiet compared to other range hoods I've had and just as effective as units costing hundreds of dollars more.Aside from the product quality, it should be noted that when the FedEx man secretly dropped off the unit at my front door and left, I discovered that the shipping box had been broken open. As a result the parts bag with all the mounting screws was missing. I called the manufacturer about the missing parts bag and they sent me a replacement bag with no fuss or arguments in less than a week at no charge. Gold stars for them.

Was great for the price!

I bought this exhaust fan because I was on a limited budget and needed a fan! I chose this fan because it had infinite speed settings (similar to a dimmer switch)and other fans of the same price range only had high and low. It also has a dimming feature on the light that works great in the evenings in my kitchen when I just need a little light, but not really performing cooking tasks. Great price.. easy install... I did find the fan is loud on high, but rarely need to use that speed setting. Be sure you purchace the charcoal filter if not venting outside. It will remove the odors.
