small freezer, big value

So far, this freezer has proved to be an excellent addition to our home. All our apartment had was a mini-fridge with a small freezer box in the very top, so we got this small freezer to accompany it.It was very easy to set up, and there are clear directions for switching which direction the door opens, which we did. It makes only a bit of noise, and is actually quieter than I would have expected. We initially had it set to the recommended temperature setting, but have since changed it since that was too cold. It works very well, and we have had no problems with it. Well worth the price.

Suppentown Compact Freezer

Freezer was double packed, took some time to "release" it from the packaging, but I was glad to see how well it was protected. Freezer works very well, but the motor mechanism takes up a significant portion of the inside cubic space. The most positive aspect was the very fast shipping time; it arrived several days before expected. Finding the temperature adjustment dial took some time; it is located on the back of the unit (which makes it a bit difficult when you need to adjust it) and hard to see.

Descent Priced product - but GE dropped one feature (details hidden in the model #)

We purchased the FCM5SUWW based on a trip to a local store and found out when we unpackaged ours that GE has pulled a fast one. The model in the store had the same model number but when you look at the actual freezer name plate on the back it has an extra letter in the model number. The model we purchased is the FCM5SUCWW and the display was model FCM5SUBWW a previous revision with the same package model number. GE has revised the model numbers and left the base order model number in the generic form so they can change production at any time. The difference between the 'B' and the 'C' model revision is the small vertical divider that is used to keep items from falling off the internal step above the compressor. This is listed in the parts diagram for previous models and was eliminated in the 'C' and newer revisions. We wish we had this information prior to putting it in service as we had another choice but food was thawing so we decided to keep it.After initial startup we noted the lid seal is not the greatest and leaks air so it tends to build up frost rapidly around the top couple inches of the freezer. After several emails back and forth we found GE's customer service has no clue and they finally suggested a service call be made. If they offered a better magnetic seal like the upright freezers this would never happen and be a great product. Customer service suggested to much humidity and to high of room temperature but it is in a 70 degree basement with 46% humidity it should have no problems whta so ever. We can't wait until it really has some humidity in the spring or summer.FYI - don't count on replacing any parts on this model as most of them exceed the initial cost of the unit. GE customer service made light of this fact but even the single wearable item like the lid seal requires the entire lid be replaced as the seal is not availible for purchase seperately a $141 cost. We only paid $159 for the complete unit.Final comment: at the end of the day; yes - it does keep frozen food frozen (quietly) and yes - it is a nice looking, small sized product. But the lid seal is a real problem and parts are not an option due to excessive cost. We only hope it will last a few years before the compressor fails due to the lid seal not sealing very well. GE should at least offer an updated replacement seal instead of having to buy a complete lid. We also wish they included the divider as previous revisions did. Shame on you GE !!!

A good buy

A good buy that is, if you buy it locally. The Amazon price is ridiculous. It can be had for no more than $200 all over the place. Anyway, it is a great product, just wish it were self defrosting. For a small family it is a perfect size, fits in a small area.

Decent purchase, worth the money

The freezer chest looks small and does not take a lot of space. It maintains temperature and is very convenient to use.It is great for a family of 4-6 people. Fits all my Costco purchases, easy for children to open and pull out the pizza.I would only change one thing in this chest: I would make the lid "slow-close".Overall it is a great item for the price.

shipping was rough

arrived on time but had a big dent in the front door. I didn't bother to return it, as the dent did not affect it's performance and I am using behind the bar at my smoothie shop. I have ordered small fridges online before and they all seem to have shipping damage, i have had to return others.

Not the greatest

This freezer is having trouble keeping things properly frozen. I have removed any items that may be placed in there long-term, as I am worried about its occasional and sudden defrosting. Not sure if I have a lemon or if all have this problem. Also, accumulates a lot of ice.

I ordered this to freeze and store my wife's breast milk. It worked for 2 months and then one day we checked and the freezer was not working and all the breast milk was thawed. The freezer made noise as it usually does but nothing was kept cold even at the highest cooling setting. This happened just after the return policy expired.

Sunpentown has a warranty that = no warranty at all!

Nice compact unit but forget the warranty! AND MINE DIDN'T LAST 12 MONTHS!PROS:The compact design of the Sunpentown uf310 upright freezer is great and the four racks make using a pleasure. It fit the space I had for a small freezer almost perfectly. Flush handle grips on a reversible door, nothing protruding to get snagged or broken.It is very easy to organize and access. It is quiet and takes very little space. The manual defrost isn't all that bad. It defrosts quickly and is fairly easy to clean up the water. With normal use seems like I could get by with defrosting the unit about every 6 months or so. I defrosted after the first 6 or 7 months of use as the drawers were getting tight from frost buildup.CONS:The real problem came after 11 months of use when the unit failed to maintain freezing temperature. Went from 0 degrees to 40 degrees overnight! The shocker and real eye opener came when I found out ALL WARRANTY REPAIR REQUIRES PREPAID SHIPPING to INDRUSTRIAL CITY, CALIFORNIA. Packing was also at my expense! The company refused to even provide packing material.UPS will ship the unit at about half the original purchase price (depending on your location). I paid $85 plus the expense of packing materials, another $20+ and I considered this cheap! I found shopping around helpful as both shipping and packing rates vary considerably by UPS Stores. One wanted over $200 to ship plus another $110 to pack the freezer.Sunpentown International just doesn't provide ANY assistance in warranty returns which can make the warranty a very expensive item if used! Better to assume there is no warranty! Glad I was in Texas and not Maine for this deal! IF WARRANTY WORK IS NEEDED IT IS CHEAPER to BUY A NEW FREEZER.Has a warranty that can become a liability! Consider the unit a one year throwaway unless you are close to their office in Calif.!The Sunpentown uf310 also claims to be 3.1 cu. ft. but that is the measurement of the entire unit plus compressor!
